The Austin WordPress WordPress Meetup Notes -3/10/2011

Hands-on Guide for Using the WordPress Dashboard

We had a great turn out for our first Hands-On  Austin WordPress meeting. Jackie Dana and Sandi Batik lead the Hands-on Guide for using the WordPress Dashboard for beginners. Nick Batik was on hand to offer after-meetup WordPress support for the members who were having issues with their sites, including, some folks who needed help with the Five-Minute WordPress Install.

Jackie and Sandi addressed how to navigating the WordPress dashboard and admin panel.

Jackie demonstrated:

  • Logging in to your site (http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin)
  • Dashboard and Admin panel features
  • Pages & Posts
  • Adding media files (images, video, etc.) and accessing media library
  • Categories, tags, links
  • Comments
  • Users (see http://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities)
  • Settings
  • As time permits: basics of design/functions: plug-ins, widgets, themes

We also covered the differences between WordPress.com or WordPress.org

When you are building a website and want to have creative control over the site, including access to all WordPress themes (or your own design), plugins and stylesheets, we recommend you do a self-install either by installing via your host or downloading from WordPress.org. See WPBeginner’s infographic for more info.

Installing WordPress

Every server/hosting company will have a different process to install WordPress. The folks at WordPress.org recommend a number of companies that optimize for WordPress and make installation simple. For those who need to install WordPress on their own server, visit the Codex entry on Installing WordPress.

Jackie and Sandi discussed other resources for those folks starting their WordPress journey.

  • WordPress Austin Google Group (great place to get help with WordPress here in town)
  • “Using WordPress” (Jackie’s site)
  • WordPress Codex (WordPress.org encyclopedia of WordPress)
  • WordPress Support Forums

Based on the tremendous response to the after-presentation ‘ask the experts’ problem solving time, we will be keeping this Q&A segment in our future “Hands-On WordPress for beginners as long as our members consider it a benefit.
